इस देश में कन्या – शिक्षा एवं आत्मनिर्भरता न होने का इससे दु:खद परिणाम और क्या हो सकता था ? पर यह म‌इया तो आत्मनिर्भर थीं ; घी और स्वेटर बना कर बेचतीं थीं ? तब संभवतः घोर युवावस्था तथा लज्जा संरक्षण का प्रश्न होगा ! जो भी हो ; उस स्त्री को भूखा-प्यासा, उसके हाल पर, विचार करने के लिए छोड़ दिया गया। अंततः चारों ओर शून्यता और निरीहता का अनुमान कर उस निरीह तथा विवश स्त्री ने पति की राह चुन ली। स्त्रियों द्वारा समस्त पुरुष परिवार को संदेश भिजवा दिया कि पति के साथ एक चिता उसकी भी सजाई जाए। किसी को कोई आपत्ति न थी। अतः चिता तैयार हो गई। जीवित स्त्री पति की देह के साथ श्मशान घाट न जा सकी होगी, अतः ग्राम के अहाते में ही एक समतल रिक्त भूखंड पर चिता सज गई। उस चिता पर वह संपूर्ण विवाह शृंगार कर, विवाह की साड़ी पहन तथा समस्त आभूषण धारण कर ; खुले केश कर बैठ गई। साथ ही उसने एक घड़ा घी भी अपने साथ ले लिया। वह घी, जो उसने स्वयं तैयार किया था। उसने कहा, कि जब आग पकड़ेगी, तब उस। घी को वह अपने ऊपर उड़ेल लेगी या आग की गर्मी से घी स्वयं खौल कर चारों ओर फैल जाएगा। दोनों स्थितियों में वह आसानी से जल जाएगी।
