कहते हैं कि अजातशत्रु का वास्तविक नाम क्या था, यह तो कोई नहीं जानता, परंतु अजातशत्रु का पराक्रम ही इतना था कि उससे शत्रुता मोल लेने के भय से सभी काँपते थे। कोई भी उसका शत्रु बनकर उसके सामने आना ही नहीं चाहता था। इसी कारण उसका नाम ‘अजातशत्रु’ पड़ गया।
