सती मइया (स्मृति आधारित सत्य कथा)
इस देश में कन्या – शिक्षा एवं आत्मनिर्भरता न होने का इससे दु:खद परिणाम और क्या हो सकता था ? पर यह मइया तो आत्मनिर्भर थीं ; घी और स्वेटर बना कर बेचतीं थीं ? तब संभवतः घोर युवावस्था तथा लज्जा संरक्षण का प्रश्न होगा ! जो भी हो ; उस स्त्री को भूखा-प्यासा, उसके हाल पर, विचार करने के लिए छोड़ दिया गया। अंततः चारों ओर शून्यता और निरीहता का अनुमान कर उस निरीह तथा विवश स्त्री ने पति की राह चुन ली। स्त्रियों द्वारा समस्त पुरुष परिवार को संदेश भिजवा दिया कि पति के साथ एक चिता उसकी भी सजाई जाए। किसी को कोई आपत्ति न थी। अतः चिता तैयार हो गई। जीवित स्त्री पति की देह के साथ श्मशान घाट न जा सकी होगी, अतः ग्राम के अहाते में ही एक समतल रिक्त भूखंड पर चिता सज गई। उस चिता पर वह संपूर्ण विवाह शृंगार कर, विवाह की साड़ी पहन तथा समस्त आभूषण धारण कर ; खुले केश कर बैठ गई। साथ ही उसने एक घड़ा घी भी अपने साथ ले लिया। वह घी, जो उसने स्वयं तैयार किया था। उसने कहा, कि जब आग पकड़ेगी, तब उस। घी को वह अपने ऊपर उड़ेल लेगी या आग की गर्मी से घी स्वयं खौल कर चारों ओर फैल जाएगा। दोनों स्थितियों में वह आसानी से जल जाएगी।

इस बार मैं सचमुच लौटी थी ; सारी आशाओं को मिटाकर लौटी थी ; सारे संबंध तोड़ने का निर्णय लेकर लौटी थी। उसने प्रथम भेंट में मुझे आदर और प्रेम के दो उपहार दिए थे। लौटने के बाद सबसे प्रथम कार्य, जैसे ही मुझे अवकाश मिला, उसके उपहार लौटाना था। मैंने डाक विभाग की त्वरित डाक प्रेषण सेवा से उसे उसके उपहार भेज दिए। उसके बाद….. कुछ नहीं ! मेरे जीवन में ऐसा कुछ सम्मिलित ही नहीं हुआ था, जो मैं उसे वापस करती। एक अनजानी सी इच्छा मन में रह-रहकर ज़ोर मारती रहती थी, कि शायद….! शायद वह मुझे कभी याद ही कर ले ! मुझे कभी कोई संदेश भेज दे ! कभी मुझे फोन ही कर ले ! किंतु वैसा कभी नहीं हुआ । उसकी ओर से नीरव शांति ; या यों कहें ; नीरव विश्रांति छा गई। यही विश्रांति आज तक अनवरत है। मैंने अपनी ओर से संपर्क बनाए रखने के प्रयास किए, परंतु मेरे प्रयास विफल हुए । श्रेय ने मेरे किसी संदेश का उत्तर नहीं दिया ; कभी नहीं दिया ; नहीं दिया, तो नहीं दिया ; उसने तो मेरे कितने संदेश देखे , कितने नहीं ; मैं यह भी नहीं जानती। मैं इन प्रतिक्रियाओं से विशेष विचलित नहीं हुई, क्योंकि मेरा वश मात्र मुझ पर है, अन्य पर नहीं।
(ऊँ श्री गणेशाय नमः ) सोने का घंटा (कहानी)
वह विशिष्ट भक्त अब भी निर्बाध आता था व लगभग सभी देवी-यात्राओं में भी रहता था। शनै:-शनै: देवी कुछ उदासीन सी प्रतीत होने लगी। देवी को उसके प्रेम तथा भक्तिभाव में छलावा अनुभूत होने लगा। अब वह भक्त देवी के दर्शनों से थोड़ा वंचित होने लगा। देवी जब उसका आह्वान करती, तो वह कारण व विवशता बता कर मंदिर न आता। जो स्वर्ण उसने देवी को अर्पित करने को एकत्र किया, अपने बंधु के साथ छल से स्वयं एक भाग रख लिया। देवी से अधिकाधिक स्वर्ण एवं धन प्राप्त करने के अनुष्ठान करने लगा। तब भी देवी स्वयं अति साधारण रह कर उसकी कामना पूर्ति करती रही। एक वर्ष और व्यतीत हो गया। अब जब उस भक्त ने देखा, कि देवी उस पर कृपा नहीं कर रही, तब उसने अनेक कठिन अनुष्ठान किए। देवी ने अब कृपा करना बहुत कम कर दिया था। अब देवी उसके मोह-जाल से मुक्त होने लगी थी। उसके लिए मंदिर के कपाट बंद रहने लगे थे। तत्पश्चात् भी यदा-कदा दर्शन-यात्रा अथवा शृंखला-यात्रा के समय वह देवी का विशेष आशीर्वाद प्राप्त कर लेता। देवी और साधारण हो गई ।
