Croatia adopts EU’s common currency-euro

• It is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe.
• Its sole coast is on the Adriatic Sea.
• It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Italy to the west and southwest.
• Capital and largest city – Zagreb
• Currency – Euro (Recently adopted)

Eurozone

• All European Union Member States are part of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and coordinate their economic policy-making to support the economic aims of the EU.
• However, a number of Member States have taken a step further by replacing their national currencies with the single currency – the euro.
• These Member States form the euro area, also known as eurozone.

Croatia adopts EU’s common currency-euro and joins Schengen Area

• Croatia adopted the European Union’s (EU) common currency, the euro, and joined the Schengen Area, Europe’s visa-free travel area, on Jan 1, 2023.
• With this, Croatia became the fully integrated member of EU.
• The country had joined the EU in 2013.
• Schengen Area signifies a zone where 27 European countries, abolished their internal borders, for the free and unrestricted movement of people.

205th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima celebrated

• The battle of Bhima Koregaon was fought on January 1, 1818, between Peshwa Bajirao II and British army commanded by Captain F F Staunton of the East India Company.
• The battle was a part of the Third AngloMaratha War.
• The British army was largely dominated by Mahars – the most populous of the Dalit subcastes in Maharashtra.
• The Dalit-dominated British Army had defeated the Peshwa army.

Centre and IVBP sign pact for Lumpi-ProVac cattle vaccine

• Centre signed a pact with the Institute of Veterinary Biological Products (IVBP) for commercial production of ‘Lumpi-ProVac’, a vaccine for lumpy skin disease in cattle.
• The vaccine was developed by the National Centre for Veterinary Type Culture and ICAR National Research Centre on Equines and ICAR Indian Veterinary Research Institute.
• Vaccines give protection for about one year.

Ajay Kumar Srivastava becomes new MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank

• Ajay Kumar Srivastava has been elevated as Managing Director and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank with effect from January 1, 2023 from his current posting as executive director.
• He started his banking career as a probationary officer in 1991 with Allahabad Bank.
• After the successful completion of about 27 years in Allahabad Bank he was elevated as Executive Director of IOB in October 2017.

Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan assumes command of the IAF Western Command

• Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha assumed the charge on 1 January 2023.
• He is a graduate of National Defence Academy, Pune and was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot in Jun 1985.
• He is an alumnus of the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
• He is recipient of ‘Vishist Seva Medal’ and ‘Ati Vishist Seva Medal.
• Sinha succeeds Air Marshal S Prabhakaran.

Lula da Silva sworn in as the President of Brazil for the 3rd time

• He was sworn in as the President for the third time on 1 January 2023 for a 4 year term.
• He defeated the incumbent president Jair Bolsonaro.
• Lula is a trade unionist.
• Geraldo Alckmin was sworn in as the Vice President of Brazil.
• Lula had previously led the country from 2003 to 2010.

108th Indian Science Congress to be held in Nagpur

• The 108 Indian national Science Congress will be organised by the Indian Science Congress Association from 3-7 January 2023 at the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University.
• 107 Indian Science Congress 2022 was held in Bangalore.
• The theme of the 108th Indian Science Congress 2023: Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women Empowerment.

International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023 kick starts on 1 Jan 2023

• Government of India sponsored the proposal for International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023 which was accepted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
• The PM of India has also shared his vision to make IYM 2023 a ‘People’s Movement’ alongside positioning India as the ‘Global Hub for Millets’.
• ‘Millets’ were among the first crops to be domesticated in India.

India’s first underwater metro will begin operation in Kolkata

• India’s first underwater metro service, the East-West Metro Corridor project is expected to be completed by December 2023.
• The metro line will connect Salt Lake to Howrah via Kolkata with a stretch below the Hooghly River.
• The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation is implementing project.
• The first metro rail system in India was also started in Kolkata from Dum Dum to Tollygunge in 1984.

RBI launches Utkarsh 2.0 for the period 2023-2025

• RBI on 30 December 2022 launched the 2nd phase of the RBI’s medium-term strategy for strengthening regulatory and supervisory mechanisms called Utkarsh 2.0.
• The 1st strategy framework (Utkarsh 2022) covering the period 2019-2022 was launched in 2019.
• Utkarsh has 6 Vision statements as well as core Purpose, Values & Mission statements.
• Collectively, they create a strategic guiding path.

Centre approves Kalasa-Banduri project in Karnataka

• It is a dam designed to divert water from the Mhadei basin to the Mala-Prabha river basin.
• The project is aimed at facilitating drinking water for 13 towns in drought-hit northern Karnataka.
• These areas include Dharwad, Belagavi, Bagalkot and Gadag.
• These regions together form the second driest region in the country after Rajasthan.
• Project is facing opposition from Goa and Maharashtra.

Sujoy Lal Thaosen takes over additional charge of Director General BSF

• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General Sujoy Lal Thaosen took the additional charge as Director General Border Security Force (BSF) in Dec’22.
• The incumbent BSF DG Pankaj Kumar Singh retired on 31 Dec 2022.
• Sujoy Lal Thaosen is a 1988 batch officer of MP cadre.
• He will hold the ‘additional charge’ of BSF DG till the appointment of a regular DG of BSF or until further orders.

Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D)

• BPR&D was established on August 28, 1970.
• BPR&D had replaced the Police Research and Advisory Council (1966) with the primary objective of modernisation of police forces.
• It comes under the administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• In 2008, the Government launched the National Police Mission under the Bureau to transform the police forces in the country.

Foundation stone of Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI) laid

• The foundation stone of the Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI) was laid at Devanahalli, Karnataka on 31 December 2022.
• This will be 6th CDTI of the Bureau of Police Research & Development under the Home Ministry.
• The 1st CDTI was set up in Calcutta in 1958.
• The objective of the CDIT is to provide training to the police personnel up to Deputy SSP rank.

Dinesh Kumar Shukla appointed as the chairman of AERB

• Dinesh Kumar Shukla, former Executive Director of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) & Distinguished Scientist assumed the charge as Chairman, AERB in December 2022.
• He has been appointed for this post for a period of 3 years.
• He is internationally acclaimed expert in the field of Nuclear Safety.
• He has been associated with the commissioning of high flux research reactor Dhruva.

India assumes chairmanship of Wassenaar Arrangement from 1 Jan

• India will assume the chairmanship for one year.
• The 42-member Wassenaar Arrangement is a voluntary export control regime that monitors transfers of conventional weapons and dualuse goods.
• Ireland handed over the chairmanship to India.
• India joined the Arrangement in December 2017 as its 42nd participating state.

Centre rolls out new integrated Food Security Scheme from 1 Jan 2023

• The new Scheme will provide free food grains to over 81 crore beneficiaries under National Food Security Act (NFSA) in 2023.
• The Scheme will also ensure effective and uniform implementation of the Act.
• Under the scheme, the Central Government will provide free foodgrains to all NFSA
• beneficiaries including Antyodaya Ann Yojana households and Priority Household persons.

SpaceX Launched First 54 Starlink v2.0 satellites Into Space

• It was launched by SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
• Satellites were launched into low Earth Orbit.
• The SpaceX Falcon 9 was launched on 28th December 2022.
• It took place from the SLC-40 launch pad of the US Air Force Base at Cape Canaveral.
• Starlink satellites aims to provide internet in various parts of the world.

• It is one of the 7 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) which comes under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Facts: Atomic Energy Regulatory Board

• Atomic Energy Regulatory Board was constituted on November 15, 1983, by the President of India by exercising the powers conferred by the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 to carry out certain regulatory and safety functions under the Act.
• The Mission of the AERB is to ensure the use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to the health of people and the environment.

Facts: Wassenaar Arrangement

• The Wassenaar Arrangement is a voluntary export control regime.
• The Arrangement, formally established in July 1996, has 42 members who exchange information on transfers of conventional weapons and dual-use goods and technologies.
• Dual-use refers to ability of a good or technology to be used for multiple purposes – usually peaceful & military.
• Arrangement’s Secretariat is in Vienna, Austria.

कोरेगांव भीमा की लड़ाई की 205वीं वर्षगांठ मनाई गई

• भीमा कोरेगांव की लड़ाई 1 जनवरी, 1818 को पेशवा बाजीराव द्वितीय और ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के कप्तान एफ एफ स्टॉन्टन की कमान वाली ब्रिटिश सेना के बीच लड़ी गई थी।
• लड़ाई तीसरे एंग्लोमराठा युद्ध का एक हिस्सा थी।
• ब्रिटिश सेना पर बड़े पैमाने पर महारों का प्रभुत्व था – महाराष्ट्र में दलित उपजातियों की सबसे अधिक आबादी।

Lumpi-ProVac मवेशी टीके के लिए केंद्र और IVBP ने समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए

• मवेशियों में गांठदार त्वचा रोग के टीके ‘लंपी-प्रोवैक’ के व्यावसायिक उत्पादन के लिए केंद्र ने पशु चिकित्सा जैविक उत्पाद संस्थान (आईवीबीपी) के साथ एक समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किए।
• यह टीका नेशनल सेंटर फॉर वेटरनरी टाइप कल्चर और आईसीएआर नेशनल रिसर्च सेंटर ऑन इक्वाइन और आईसीएआर इंडियन वेटरनरी रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट द्वारा विकसित किया गया था।

बाजरा का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय वर्ष (IYM) 2023 किक 1 जनवरी 2023 को शुरू होता है

• भारत सरकार ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बाजरा वर्ष (IYM) 2023 के प्रस्ताव को प्रायोजित किया जिसे संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा (UNGA) ने स्वीकार कर लिया।

भारत की पहली अंडरवाटर मेट्रो कोलकाता में शुरू होगी

• भारत की पहली अंडरवाटर मेट्रो सेवा, ईस्ट-वेस्ट मेट्रो कॉरिडोर परियोजना दिसंबर 2023 तक पूरी होने की उम्मीद है।
• मेट्रो लाइन हुगली नदी के नीचे एक खंड के साथ कोलकाता के माध्यम से साल्ट लेक को हावड़ा से जोड़ेगी।
• कोलकाता मेट्रो रेल कॉरपोरेशन इस परियोजना को क्रियान्वित कर रहा है।
• भारत में पहली मेट्रो रेल प्रणाली भी 1984 में दमदम से टॉलीगंज तक कोलकाता में शुरू की गई थी।

आरबीआई ने 2023-2025 की अवधि के लिए उत्कर्ष 2.0 लॉन्च किया

• आरबीआई ने 30 दिसंबर 2022 को उत्कर्ष 2.0 नामक नियामक और पर्यवेक्षी तंत्र को मजबूत करने के लिए आरबीआई की मध्यम अवधि की रणनीति का दूसरा चरण शुरू किया।
• 2019-2022 की अवधि को कवर करने वाला पहला रणनीति ढांचा (उत्कर्ष 2022) 2019 में लॉन्च किया गया था।
• उत्कर्ष के पास 6 विजन स्टेटमेंट के साथ-साथ मूल उद्देश्य, मूल्य और मिशन स्टेटमेंट हैं।
• सामूहिक रूप से, वे एक रणनीतिक मार्गदर्शक मार्ग बनाते हैं।

केंद्र ने कर्नाटक में कलसा-बंदूरी परियोजना को मंजूरी दी

• यह एक बांध है जिसे महादेई बेसिन से माला-प्रभा नदी बेसिन में पानी मोड़ने के लिए बनाया गया है।

• वह बीएसएफ के नियमित डीजी की नियुक्ति तक या अगले आदेश तक बीएसएफ डीजी का ‘अतिरिक्त प्रभार’ संभालेंगे।

पुलिस अनुसंधान और विकास ब्यूरो (बीपीआर एंड डी)

• बीपीआरएंडडी की स्थापना 28 अगस्त, 1970 को हुई थी।
• बीपीआरएंडडी ने पुलिस बलों के आधुनिकीकरण के प्राथमिक उद्देश्य के साथ पुलिस अनुसंधान और सलाहकार परिषद (1966) को बदल दिया था।

भारत 1 जनवरी से वासेनार व्यवस्था की अध्यक्षता ग्रहण करता है

• 42-सदस्यीय वासेनार व्यवस्था एक स्वैच्छिक निर्यात नियंत्रण व्यवस्था है जो पारंपरिक हथियारों और दोहरे उपयोग वाले सामानों के हस्तांतरण की निगरानी करती है।
• आयरलैंड ने भारत को अध्यक्षता सौंपी।

केंद्र ने 1 जनवरी 2023 से नई एकीकृत खाद्य सुरक्षा योजना शुरू की

• नई योजना 2023 में राष्ट्रीय खाद्य सुरक्षा अधिनियम (एनएफएसए) के तहत 81 करोड़ से अधिक लाभार्थियों को मुफ्त खाद्यान्न प्रदान करेगी।
• योजना अधिनियम के प्रभावी और समान कार्यान्वयन को भी सुनिश्चित करेगी।
• योजना के तहत, केंद्र सरकार सभी एनएफएसए को मुफ्त खाद्यान्न प्रदान करेगी
