It normally indicates quality, size, shape, duration, feelings,<br>contents, and more about a noun or pronoun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun by providing descriptive or specific detail. Unlike adverbs, adjectives do not modify verbs, other adjectives, or adverbs. Adjectives usually precede the noun or pronoun they modify. Adjectives do not have to agree in number or gender with the nouns they describe. Adjectives answer the following questions: What kind?, How many?, or Which ones?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Example<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>My mom is a <em>pretty<\/em> lady.<\/li><li>The drawing is very <em>beautiful.<\/em><\/li><li>The <em>green<\/em> tree is full of flowers.<\/li><li>Today I will eat <em>three<\/em> burgers.<\/li><li>The elephant is very <em>big<\/em> in size.<\/li><li>She was wearing a <em>red<\/em> shirt.<\/li><li>The flowers smell <em>good.<\/em><\/li><li>There are <em>eleven<\/em> players in football team.<\/li><li>He is a <em>lazy<\/em> man.<\/li><li>I enjoy sleeping on my <em>comfortable<\/em> bed. <\/li><li>\nTom bought a used car. (used describes what kind of car Tom bought.)<\/li><li>Sally baked ten pies for the school bake sale. (ten tells how many pies Sally baked.)<\/li><li>Bob climbed that tree in the backyard. (that specifies which tree Bob climbed.)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2179\/1627796840_ce88d27a75_b.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-adjectives\">Types of Adjectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Descriptive Adjectives<\/strong><br>A descriptive adjective names a quality of the noun or pronoun that it modifies.<br>Example: <strong>brown <\/strong>dog      <strong>bigger <\/strong>house       <strong>fluffy <\/strong>cat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Monica is very <em>tired<\/em> today.<\/li><li>Mohan\u2019s drawing is <em>amazing.<\/em><\/li><li>The car is moving very <em>fast.<\/em><\/li><li>The children are <em>hungry.<\/em><\/li><li>The flowers have a <em>nice<\/em> smell.<\/li><li>Rita is such a <em>pretty<\/em> girl.<\/li><li>Sohan is a <em>brave<\/em> boy.<\/li><li>We had a <em>fantastic<\/em> trip last year.<\/li><li>She handed me a blue book.<\/li><li>The <em>big fat<\/em> cat rolled over in the mud.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hifcUYaACzI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wC5GPzMb9BE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code><\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quantitative-adjective\">Quantitative Adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It describes the number or quantity of noun or pronoun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples include all, no, few, many, any, some, each, either, every ,whole, sufficient, most, none and little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have only <em>few<\/em> balloons to decorate the room.<\/li><li>There are <em>ten<\/em> pencils in my box.<\/li><li>Ron has many clothes in his almirahs.<\/li><li>I have got a <em>little<\/em> money for new dress.<\/li><li><em>Most<\/em> of the people i know are good in nature.<\/li><li>Can you please lend me <em>some<\/em> money?<\/li><li>Four girls are participating in school function.<\/li><li>I do not have any chocolates in my bag.<\/li><li>There is enough juice for my breakfast.<\/li><li>That sentence just doesn\u2019t make <em>any<\/em> sense.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"numeral-adjective\">Numeral adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A numeral adjective is an adjective that tells us about how many or how much or in what order the noun is in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three kinds of numeral adjectives: Definite numeral adjectives, indefinite numeral adjectives and distributive numeral adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(a)<\/em> <em>Definite numeral adjectives<\/em> use cardinal (numbers used in an amount) and ordinals (numbers used as an order).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(b) Indefinite numeral adjectives :<\/em> They indicate an indefinite number. Examples are: some, many, few, all, no, several etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(c) Distributive numeral adjectives<\/em><em>:<\/em> In a sentence when the words such as each, every, neither, either are used to describe then it is known as a distributive numeral adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <em>third<\/em> man was sitting over there.<\/li><li>He bought <em>ten<\/em> pencils from market.<\/li><li>There are <em>few<\/em> children in the class.<\/li><li>There is <em>no<\/em> garbage in the bin.<\/li><li>I wrote <em>many<\/em> letters to you.<\/li><li><em>Every<\/em> child is special.<\/li><li>I have bought <em>some<\/em> mangoes from the market.<\/li><li><em>Most<\/em> of the students are intelligent.<\/li><li><em>Either<\/em> of the method is wrong.<\/li><li>My hand has <em>five<\/em> fingers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"demonstrative-adjective\">Demonstrative Adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrative adjective are used to identify or express the relative position of a noun.Some common demonstrative adjectives are this, that, these, those .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstrative adjective in a sentence will come just before a noun or pronoun and tell you which one it is specifically modifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you please give me <em>that<\/em> red colour pen.<\/li><li><em>That<\/em> flower is very beautiful.<\/li><li><em>This<\/em> is my favourite dress.<\/li><li><em>This<\/em> is my watch.<\/li><li><em>Those<\/em> apples are rotten.<\/li><li><em>These<\/em> people are new in our area.<\/li><li><em>These<\/em> shoes are more comfortable.<\/li><li><em>Those<\/em> are your books.<\/li><li>He <em>lives<\/em> in this house.<\/li><li><em>That<\/em> is a kite.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"distributive-adjective\">Distributive Adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An Adjective which is used to refer each and every person or things<br>separately or describe specific member out of a group is called<br>Distributive Adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include each, either, neither, every, any ,one, both etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Each boy was gives a book.<\/li><li><em>Either<\/em> you will go to the market or i will.<\/li><li>We should wash our hands after <em>every<\/em> meal.<\/li><li>There are beautiful flowers on <em>either<\/em> side of road.<\/li><li>Can any <em>one<\/em> please switch off the fan.<\/li><li>Every one should take care of their parents.<\/li><li>She watch that cartoon <em>every<\/em> day.<\/li><li><em>Each hand has<\/em> five fingers.<\/li><li>Neither answer was correct.<\/li><li><em>Neither<\/em> of you are allowed in this class.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"interrogative-adjective\">Interrogative Adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interrogative Adjective modifies noun or pronoun and ask questions too. They are used with nouns to ask questions such as what, whose, where, why, how and which.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Which<\/em> dresses are you buying today?<\/li><li><em>Whose<\/em> car will they give us?<\/li><li><em>What<\/em> dessert would you like?<\/li><li><em>What<\/em> is your question?<\/li><li><em>When<\/em> did he get married?<\/li><li><em>Which<\/em> is the largest river in India?<\/li><li><em>Whose<\/em> books shall I borrow?<\/li><li><em>What<\/em> a beautiful place is this?<\/li><li><em>What<\/em> ingredient did you choose to make this dish?<\/li><li><em>What<\/em> show are you watching?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"possessive-adjective\">Possessive Adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A word that indicates the possession of the noun to a person\/a few people. The possessive adjectives are my, our, your, his, their, her, and its.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I am looking after <em>her<\/em> baby.<\/li><li><em>My<\/em> mother is a very intelligent and kind.<\/li><li>I do not want to talk to <em>your<\/em> brother.<\/li><li><em>Our<\/em> father told us to do all the work.<\/li><li>It is <em>his<\/em> bicycle.<\/li><li>Why didn\u2019t you clean <em>your<\/em> room?<\/li><li>The students of class seven submitted their assignment.<\/li><li>The blue car is my brother\u2019s; the red car is <em>mine<\/em>.<\/li><li>The chameleon can change its color.<\/li><li>How old is <em>your<\/em> sister.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Proper Adjectives<\/strong><br>A proper adjective is derived from a proper noun.<br>Example: <strong>French <\/strong>class       <strong>Spanish <\/strong>food       <strong>European <\/strong>car <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Limiting Adjectives<\/strong><br>A limiting adjective restricts the meaning of the word it modifies.<br>Example: <strong>that <\/strong>car       <strong>this<\/strong> room       <strong>the <\/strong>tree<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Interrogative Adjectives<\/strong><br>An interrogative adjective is used to ask a question.<br>Example: <strong>Whose <\/strong>book is this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Coordinate Adjectives<\/strong><br>A coordinate adjective consists of two or more adjectives separated by a comma instead of by a coordinating conjunction.<br>Example: a cold, rainy day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><br>To determine if you can replace the coordinating conjunction with a comma, see if the adjectives can be reversed or if and can be added between the adjectives without changing the meaning. If the adjectives can be reversed, they are coordinate and a comma can be used.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The clowns arrived in a <strong>bright<\/strong>, <strong>shiny <\/strong>car.<\/li><li>The clowns arrived in a <strong>shiny<\/strong>, <strong>bright <\/strong>car. (Reversing bright and shiny does not change the meaning.)<\/li><li>The clowns arrived in a <strong>bright <\/strong>and <strong>shiny <\/strong>car. (Adding and between bright and shiny does not change the meaning.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if the adjectives cannot be reversed or if and cannot be used, a comma cannot be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The clowns arrived in two colorful cars.<\/li><li>The clowns arrived in colorful two cars. (Reversing two and colorful changes the meaning.)<\/li><li>The clowns arrived in two and colorful cars. (Adding and between two and colorful changes the meaning.)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Compound Adjectives<br><\/strong>Compound adjectives consist of two or more words that function as a unit. Depending on its position within the sentence, the compound adjective is punctuated with or without a hyphen. When a compound adjective comes before the noun it modifies, use a hyphen to join the adjectives. When a compound adjective follows the noun it modifies, do not use a hyphen to join the adjectives.<br>Example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>She is taking a class on nineteenth-century literature. (The adjective nineteenth-century precedes the noun literature so a hyphen is used.)<\/li><li>She is studying literature from the nineteenth century. (The adjective nineteenth century comes after the noun literature so no hyphen is used.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Determiners as Adjectives<\/strong><br>Determiners, such as articles, pronouns, and numbers, can function as adjectives. When a determiner is used as an adjective, it restricts the noun it modifies, like a limiting adjective. Determiners functioning as adjectives tell Which one?, How many?, and Whose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Articles (a, an, the)<br>Possessive pronouns (my, our, your, his, her, its, their)<br>Relative pronouns (whose, which, whichever, what, whatever)<br>Demonstratives (this, these, that, those)<br>Indefinite pronouns (any, each, other, some, etc.)<br>Cardinal Numbers (one, two, three, etc.)<br>Ordinal Numbers (last, first, second, etc.)<br>Possessive proper nouns (Bob\u2019s, Sarah\u2019s)<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bob\u2019s house is only three blocks from that house. (Bob\u2019s answers the question: Whose house? Three answers the question: How many blocks? That answers the question: Which house is three blocks from Bob\u2019s house?)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"placement-and-order-of-adjectives\">Placement and Order of Adjectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A single noun can be described as a list of adjectives. When more then one adjective is used to modify a noun, it is important to consider the order in which the adjectives appear. Generally, the adjectives most important in completing the meaning of the noun are placed closest to the noun. Following is the usual order of adjectives in a series:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Determiners: articles (<em>a, the<\/em>), demonstratives (<em>this, those<\/em>), and possessives (<em>his, our, Mary\u2019s, everybody\u2019s<\/em>), amounts (<em>one, five, many, few<\/em>), order (<em>first, next last<\/em>)<\/li><li>Coordinate adjectives (<em>subjective evaluations or personal opinions<\/em>): nice, nasty, packed, pitiful<\/li><li>Adjectives describing size: <em>big, huge, little, tiny<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing shape: <em>long, short, round, square<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing age: <em>young, old, modern, ancient<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing color: <em>blue, green, red, white<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing nationality: <em>Italian, French, Japanese<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing architectural style or religion:<em> Greek, Gothic, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim<\/em><\/li><li>Adjectives describing material: <em>cardboard, plastic, silver, gold<\/em><\/li><li>Nouns functioning as adjectives: <em>soccer ball, cardboard box, history class<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a big brick house (<em>article, size, and material<\/em>)<\/li><li>these old brown cardboard boxes (<em>demonstrative, age, color, material<\/em>)<\/li><li>a beautiful young Italian woman (<em>article, personal opinion, age, nationality<\/em>)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"using-adjectives\">Using Adjectives<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Adjectives as Subject Complements<\/em><br>The subject complement is a word that follows a linking verb and modifies the sentence\u2019s subject, not its verb. Linking verbs: appear, become, believe, feel, grow, smell, seem, sound, remain, turn, prove, look, taste, and the forms of the verb to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: The crowd appeared <strong>calm<\/strong>. (The linking verb <em>appeared <\/em>links the noun the subject crowd with the adjective <strong>calm<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em><strong>Adjectives as Object Complements<br><\/strong><\/em>The object complement is a word that follows a sentence\u2019s direct object and modifies that object and not the verb. An object complement answers the question what? after the direct object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Example: Bob considered the experiment a <strong>success<\/strong>. (<strong>Success <\/strong>is the object compliment that modifies the sentences <em>direct object experiment<\/em>.)<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Adjectives with Past and Present Participle Verbs<\/em><br><\/strong>Adjectives are frequently formed by using the past participle (-ed, -t, or -en) and the present participle (-ing) verb forms.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: The group of children scared the <strong>sleeping <\/strong>dog. (<em>Sleeping <\/em>describes the baby.)<br>The students refused to eat the <strong>dried <\/strong>fruit.
